Treasury reporting requirement

The Requirement

A FTSE 30 food manufacturer needed to modernise a business-critical treasury reporting process that had become dependent on complex Excel workbooks, manual preparation and specialist knowledge held by a small number of people.

The Treasury team required a governed reporting platform capable of providing trusted daily visibility of liquidity positions, cash movements and currency exposure. The solution also needed to improve auditability, support regulatory confidence and create a scalable foundation for future treasury reporting requirements.

The Challenge

The existing reporting process was fragile and time-consuming. Multiple Excel files were used to manage high volumes of treasury activity, but the workbook logic was difficult to maintain and much of the original design knowledge had been lost.

Manual preparation and validation introduced a growing risk of error. The process was hard to audit, difficult to scale and unable to provide rapid historic reconstruction of treasury positions, holdings and exchange rates across large data volumes.

Our Approach

Process Understanding: Maxica began by reverse-engineering the existing Excel workbook and validating how the reporting logic operated in practice.

Stakeholder Playback: Findings were played back to Treasury stakeholders, helping expose hidden assumptions and areas where critical calculation logic needed to be clarified.

Iterative Delivery: Maxica used a phased delivery model covering discovery, ETL, data transformation, data modelling, visualisation, testing and deployment.

Continuous Enhancement: Further delivery phases extended the platform with scalable money market fund integration, enhanced KPI logic, improved waterfall modelling and additional treasury reporting capability.

Cash Movement Business Solution

Our Solution

Maxica delivered a governed treasury intelligence platform in Power BI, integrating data from authoritative finance and treasury sources. The platform replaced spreadsheet dependency with scalable data modelling, automated transformation and interactive reporting.

The solution provides daily visibility of treasury positions, liquidity movement and cash exposure. It can analyse more than 3 million rows of treasury data in seconds and enables near real-time historic reconstruction of positions, holdings and exchange rates on any chosen date.

Further enhancements introduced dynamic money market fund reporting, projected balance modelling, waterfall chart improvements and refined liquidity KPI logic, creating a more scalable and trusted reporting capability.

Benefits

Daily Treasury Insight: A difficult monthly reporting process was transformed into a trusted daily reporting capability.

Reduced Manual Effort: Weeks of manual monthly preparation were eliminated, with approximately 8 hours per week of Treasury effort saved.

Improved Assurance: Spreadsheet fragility and key-person dependency were removed, improving governance, auditability and control.

Faster Analysis: More than 3 million rows of treasury data can now be modelled and analysed in seconds.

Better Decisions: Improved forecasting and visibility support pre-emptive treasury decision-making, with an estimated £5+ million improvement in financial decision outcomes.

Why it Worked

The engagement worked because Maxica did not simply rebuild the reports. The team first established clarity around the underlying data flows, calculation logic and operational risks before designing the replacement platform.

By combining Power BI delivery expertise with practical treasury reporting understanding, Maxica created a scalable solution that improved confidence, reduced operational risk and gave stakeholders a single trusted source of treasury reporting data.
